Congratulations to Asia from Meadowcreek Elementary School for winning the 2012 Great Days of Service T-Shirt Design Contest. Continuing the theme from 2011, “Caring Hearts. Helping Hands”, Great Days of Service partnered with Gwinnett County Public School’s Meadowcreek Elementary School (MES) to find this year’s budding artist to create the 2012 T-shirt design.
Working with Mrs. Purna Aruja, MES’s art teacher, and Mrs. Danuoy, the principal at MES, the third, fourth and fifth grade art classes were asked to create a design for the theme. “I appreciate being asked to coordinate this contest. I had a couple of fourth and fifth grade classes participate. The students were asked to brainstorm and do a few sketches on the theme. Since I see them once every eight days, they were asked to continue with their ideas at home, or come to the art class in the mornings and work on them. Asia continued to come to my class every morning, and wanted to produce several variations on the idea. I am not surprised that one of Asia’s ideas was chosen as the winning design,” stated Mrs. Aruja.
”Selecting the winner was no easy feat this year,” recalls Nicole Love, associate director of the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services. “Mrs. Aruja had a very hard time narrowing down the top 15 for our committee to select the winner.”
This is the second year Great Days of Service has partnered with Gwinnett County Public School to create the T-shirt artwork. “The school system is such an integral part of Great Days of Service that they were the perfect fit for our initiative to involve students in the project for more than just the two days in October to promote a on-going culture of people helping people with the students,” says Regina Vella, chair of the Gwinnett Great Days of Service.
Gwinnett Great Days of Service is an annual event that promotes volunteerism across the county. It draws tens of thousands of volunteers each year to give back to their communities through community service projects and sponsorship. Last year 80,000 participants contributed more than 300,000 hours to over 300 projects in the two-day event.
Gwinnett Great Days of Service will take place on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2012. For more information, visit www.gwinnettgreatdaysofservice.org.
