Veteran Coach to Fulfill Career Goal at GGC: Building Women’s Soccer Program

Veteran women’s soccer coach Domenic Martelli has been chosen to lead the women’s soccer program at Georgia Gwinnett College, with the team’s inaugural season less than a year away. A Lawrenceville resident, Martelli has had his eye on GGC for years and labels it an ideal fit for him professionally and personally.

Martelli comes to GGC with 18 years of Division I coaching experience. He spent the last 12 seasons at Georgia State University, where he served as the institution’s winningest coach in school history, amassing a record of 109-106-25.

“It’s thrilling to be a part of what is beginning to take place at GGC,” said Martelli, the second coaching hire by GGC in the last six weeks. “This is a golden opportunity– a college growing academically, technologically and, of course, athletically. To be able to start a brand new program, work for Dr. Darin Wilson, and be part of an Office of Athletics that is on the cusp of building a $13.5 million athletic facility is extremely exciting.”

Can Adding Math Help Subtract Obesity?

Carrie Scheiner is not ashamed of being a bit of a math nerd.

But don’t let her degree in Math education from Rutgers University fool you – she is also a big fan of physical fitness, and her passion for both has led to her to think of exercise for kids in a completely new way.

“As adults, we don’t think about it, but much of our exercise regimens revolve around counting,” said Scheiner, creator of Exploracise, an exercise DVD for kids and parents (www.exploracise.com). “So I began thinking about how much more fun, and healthy, math could be for kids if we combined it with exercise. That was the genesis of my combination of the two disciplines.”

Stone Mountain Park’s Geyser Towers Set To Erupt in Spring 2012

New GGC Baseball Coach Ready to Start Program from Scratch

With an intercollegiate athletics program now getting off the ground, Georgia Gwinnett College took the first step toward fielding a baseball team this week with the hiring of Brad Stromdahl as head coach.

Stromdahl, an assistant to Greg Frady for the last six years at Georgia State University, comes to GGC with 13 years of collegiate baseball coaching experience.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to start a baseball program and athletic department from scratch,” said Stromdahl shortly after being hired. “GGC offers an absolutely outstanding opportunity for this community to grow together, both academically and as a baseball program.”

Area High Schools Compete to Win in RaceTrac Rivarly Bowl

Through October 10, the 2011 RaceTrac Rivalry Bowl will offer fans of eight North Georgia prep-school football programs the chance to best cross-town rivals, win cool prizes—and give back to their favorite schools. Participating schools will compete against their rivals to win a $3,500 donation from RaceTrac. Help Keep Children Safe: Become a radKIDS Certified Instructor

Keep Georgia Safe, a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to provide safety education and crime prevention training, is sponsoring radKIDS national instructor certification training Oct. 17-20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Greater Atlanta Christian School.

This training is an excellent opportunity for elementary school P.E. teachers, health teachers, counselors, camp counselors, after-school teachers and parents that are willing to take the radKIDS program to the community. Participation can include attending, sending a representative(s) from your organization or by spreading the news to community centers, schools, nonprofits, and other family/child centered organizations.

Dogs Dive for a Cause at Lake Lanier Pet Fest

Don’t miss Lake Lanier Pet Fest, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Oct. 1-2 at Laurel Park on Lake Lanier. Come see the amazing Dixie Dock Dogs diving competition! There will be agility demonstrations, inflatable fun for the kids, live music, dog contests and pets available for adoption. This second-year event will introduce the Pet Fest 5K and Dog Trot at 8 a.m. Oct. 1.

All Lake Lanier Pet Fest proceeds will help fund adoption programs at the Hall County Animal Shelter. The Hall County Animal Shelter provides abandoned animals with a temporary home, medical services including spay/neuter, and help finding a loving family. Operated by the Animal Services Division of Hall County Government, the Animal Shelter reduces the unwanted pet population through low-cost adoptions, spay/neuter services and public education, and enhances public safety by offering microchips and rabies vaccinations. The Animal Shelter, located at 1688 Barber Road, welcomes community support to better accomplish its mission of “Helping Pets, Helping People.”
